Abstract

The purpose of the study: to provide a theoretical understanding of ballroom dance as a polymorphic cultural text and to identify the main levels of its polymorphism.

Methods: the study is based on semiotic-structuralist, cultural studies, and interdisciplinary approaches, supplemented by the methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, and theoretical interpretation. The methodological framework is grounded in the concepts of polymorphism, “culture as text,” choreographic semiotics, and performance interpretation.

Scientific novelty: for the first time, ballroom dance is conceptualized as a polymorphic cultural text, and the main levels of its polymorphism are systematized: historical-cultural, stylistic, partner-based sociocultural, and performance-interpretive. The theoretical understanding of the interaction between normativity and variability within the structure of ballroom choreography is refined, and the role of partner interaction and music as semiotic mechanisms for the formation and transmission of artistic meaning is substantiated. The proposed model expands the cultural and choreological interpretation of ballroom dance as a dynamic system capable of preserving structural identity under conditions of multiple forms of its artistic actualization.

Results: the study substantiates the relevance of considering ballroom dance as a polymorphic cultural text capable of preserving structural integrity while simultaneously generating multiple forms of artistic representation, communication, and actualization of meaning. The main levels of its polymorphism are identified: historical-cultural, stylistic, partner-based sociocultural, and performance-interpretive. The historical and cultural determinants of the transformation of ballroom dance, its stylistic variability, the diversity of partner interaction models, and the possibility of multiple individual performance interpretations of a structurally defined choreographic form are revealed. It is established that the polymorphic nature of ballroom dance is formed through the interaction of normativity and variability, stability and transformability. The semiotic nature of partner interaction is substantiated, within which movement, posture, gesture, the nature of physical contact, and the spatial organization of the couple function as means of shaping and transmitting emotional and semantic content. It is revealed that music is a cross-cutting factor that ensures the interconnection of the structural, stylistic, figurative-emotional, partner-based, and performance-interpretive levels of polymorphism.

Conclusions: the theoretical understanding of ballroom dance as a polymorphic cultural text makes it possible to consider it not only as an artistic form but also as a dynamic cultural system in which normativity, variability, and multiple modes of artistic embodiment are combined. The proposed model of the levels of polymorphism deepens the theoretical understanding of contemporary ballroom choreography and can be applied to further cultural, art historical, and choreological analysis of ballroom dance.
