Object is to identify the specific features of intermedial interaction in the structure of Joseph Losey’s film-opera Don Giovanni (1979).
Methods & methodology involve combining a semiotic approach with film-text analysis, as well as musicological and comparative analysis.
Scientific novelty of the article lies in revealing the intermedial connections that permeate the structure of the film text, as well as in interpreting the meanings that emerge as a result of this interaction.
Results. The film appears as a polycode semiotic formation, a medial transposition, that is, a translation of opera into the language of cinema, and also as a field for the realization of intermedial references associated with the thematization of “operaticness” and the imitation of the aesthetic traditions of the operatic system as a whole and of its subsystems. The construction of the film text takes place in the context of intermedial interaction, embodied through a balance between “theatricality” and “cinematicity”. The effect of the “flickering” communication channel conditions the generation of meanings.
Conclusions. The musicalization of the film text involves the formation of visual tropes, the reinterpretation of musical form, and consideration of musical texture in the editing process. The concept of “vocality” is revealed through restrained facial expression and gesture, off-screen singing and shooting from behind, as well as long takes with changes of shot scale. Acting plasticity marked by stasis and posing, the specific features of mise-en-scène and scenography, and the conventions of stage communication determine a distancing from “cinematic truth” and a movement toward the theatrical code. By contrast, the artistic aim of moving away from the format of a statically filmed opera performance determines the use of a wide arsenal of means of cinematic expression – synchronous sound in recitatives, intertitles, noise effects, camera movements and angles – aimed at creating the dramaturgy of the opera’s numbers.
